Music and Drama at the New York Institute for Special Education

Coming back from Thanksgiving is always challenging, but our students at the NYISE came back with energy and excitement, when we talked about their past visit at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). Our 11th and 12th graders who visited discussed their favorite exhibits at FIT, and mentioned how what they learned at FIT influenced their style today. The senior class translated their experiences into a rap song, showing their personal style, while the 11th graders led a discussion about the importance of “playing by the fashion rules” in the real world. Next week, both classes will partake in mixing and matching real clothes, especially with making both casual and formal looks, and how to bring those looks to a job interview.

Our 3rd and 4th graders deepened their understanding of their communication skills, and will be soon working on voice projection techniques in addition to their role playing. Their role plays have become more sophisticated, and now feature a “director”, a “cameraman”, and an “audio engineer”, in addition to our actors. It has been an exciting month of role plays for our 3rd and 4th graders – they have met Wolverine, Tony Stark aka Iron Man, as well as Selena Gomez, all while improving on their communication skills.
