Exploring portraiture at the Brooklyn Museum

The students from the Hyde Leadership Charter School visited the Brooklyn Museum last Thursday. Their tour guide, Ms. Adjoa, started off the visit with a quick introduction on what portraits are and what we can learn from them.  Before making their first stop, she encouraged the students to play the detectives and to make sure to not let any clues go by. Students first examined Gilbert Stuart’s Georges Washington. Students proved to have a great sense of observation and deduction. They noticed right away the sword, the neat attire, the welcoming and steady stance and other details reflecting the quality of a great leader. Students learned to read and interpret each detail to better understand the meaning of the portraits they examined from facial expression to posture to clothing and the settings.
