“Body Language” – The Studio Museum in Harle

3rd and 4th graders from the New York Institute visited the Studio Museum in Harlem this morning. Starting up with an introduction to body language with the work of art “Give us A Poem” named after the famous short poem by Muhammed Ali: “Me We”. Students explored ways the letters and their meaning connect to each using movements. Prompted by Shanta Scoot, their tour guide for the day, students also looked at a photograph by Dawoud Bey, Charita, 2001. They reenacted the “sassy” position of the subject and discussed what they could learn about her just by reading her body language. Ms. Shanta talked about how gestures and movements can be similar to words, and how much portraits and other works of art can teach us a lot about who a person is or how this person wants to be perceived.
