Module 1 – State of the Field: Museum Accessibility

Objective

To understand the existing state of museum accessibility and to recognize the need for museum professionals to include accessibility in their professional practice.

Overview

This module offers a snapshot of the state of accessibility throughout the museum field. It identifies traditional approaches to inclusive practices and the factors that motivate disability inclusion today.

This module also highlights the most innovative practices to create full participation by all museum visitors. Content is based on the latest research, including studies conducted in collaboration with Art Beyond Sight, accessibility materials made available by museums, and the opinions of experts in the field.

These resource materials provide a starting point from which to introduce the legal aspects of disability and demonstrate how museums have responded to the need to make their facilities as well as their exhibitions and programs accessible.  They can be used in classes introducing the challenges that museums face in serving people with disabilities.
